Naturally Inclusive: How the Enneagram Brings DEI to Life
I have always been attuned to fairness and justice. At first I thought it was connected to how many children I used to teach and interact with on a daily basis, but now I know it is one of the cornerstones of my personality type, an Enneagram 9. All body types (8, 9 and 1) have an internal meter attuned to issues of justice that play out in a variety of ways.
In many ways, I think this particular issue is what got me hooked on the Enneagram in the first place - it values what I value and gives language to why I feel so strongly about fairness in the world.
The Enneagram is an examination of what we care about most, even when we won't admit it; our deepest fears, desires and motivations. It doesn't come from a particular worldview or specific research project. It has grown out of the natural observation of human beings.
The very nature of the Enneagram system is a universal DEI, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion policy.
The Enneagram teaches that there are nine ways to see the world. Each of these ways is unique and each of these ways is crucial for explaining the experience of being human. There are no worse or better numbers in the Enneagram landscape, however frustrated we have become with our friends and coworkers.
Integrating Enneagram insights into DEI initiatives helps build a workplace culture that not only welcomes diverse identities but also supports individuals in bringing their full selves to work.
Key Ways the Enneagram Naturally Supports DEI
1. Trauma-Informed Approach
The Enneagram is a trauma-informed system that recognizes how personal experiences, cultural context, and family background shape each person’s core motivations. This means your team gains deeper insights into the "why" behind each person’s behaviour, leading to more compassion and understanding.
2. Drives Deeper Understanding
Go beyond surface-level diversity to help your team understand the core motivations and communication styles of each person. This means fewer misunderstandings and better collaboration.
3. Builds a Stronger Team Culture
Empower team members to recognize and respect differences, creating an environment where everyone’s contributions are valued—essential for retaining top talent and creating a culture of respect.
4. Enhances Conflict Resolution
Give your team practical strategies for navigating conflict and feedback, allowing for faster, more effective resolution of issues and less time spent on interpersonal drama.
5. Boosts Self-Awareness and Accountability
Encourage team members to take ownership of their strengths and challenges, making them more accountable and self-aware. This means more independent, high-performing team players.
6. Aligns with Your Vision for Fairness and Justice
Support your commitment to equity by ensuring that each team member feels seen and heard for who they are—not just their role. It’s a powerful way to build trust and create a level playing field.
By incorporating the Enneagram into your workplace, you’re not just checking a box—you’re watching DEI in action.
