Driven by Data - Team Assessment Metrics
Updated: 13 hours ago
There are so many branches to the Enneagram and the ways it can be used for team development and strategy. The Enneagram deals in groupings of three. Optimal team cohesion and effectiveness is a balance in all three groupings, in all three triads.
Real Life Example
I am currently working with a small team that has done significant vision and personality alignment work with a variety of systems including DiSC and Working Genius. They spend time developing relationships and working on ways to assign roles that fit with each of their unique skills and strengths. They are a fantastic team!
After an assessment of each team member, here's what we found:
In the Centres of Intelligence, the primary method of decision-making, the team was completely balanced. This means, assuming the roles of the team members are well-assigned and valued, their team will have the ability to see, evaluate and solve problems in an effective and well-balanced way.
In the Harmonic Groups, the dominant method for handling conflict, obstacles and disappointment, the team was completely balanced. Again, assuming roles and team dynamics are healthy, this team will have a balanced and flexible approach to handling conflict and obstacles in their day-to-day work environment.
And then things got interesting, as you can see in the graph, there are only two groupings, rather than the typical three above. There is an imbalance in the Hornevian Group, the dominant method of getting needs met and tasks accomplished. What isn't showing on this graph is one of the Hornevian Centres: The Compliant Group. Not only is this one low or out of balance, but it is completely missing.
As we proceeded to integrate our findings with the team, we started seeing the impact of the imbalance in this final grouping. It turned out to be a question the team had been contemplating for the past year. Now we had an explanation for the imbalance and a concrete lead on how to find a solution.
Powerful Teams
Powerful teams look at two things: what is working and what isn't. They don't assume they have thought of everything, they are always looking for a new and more effective way to solve problems and push their team forward. Neutral doesn't exist.
The Enneagram gives you a detailed look at all of the pieces of the puzzle:
Personality Analysis - What is holding individuals back from performing at their best?
Team Composition - Where are the gaps in our team's collective skillset hindering our overall performance?
Vision and Strategy - What obstacles are preventing team members from fully aligning with and contributing to our shared vision?
It's Time to Ask
What is holding your team back?
Where are you overusing strategies because they worked in the past?
Where are you underusing strategies that could create a breakthrough?
